A
strategically and commercially important area, Lerici had been fought
over since the Middle Ages by Pisa and Genoa. Both of these maritime
powers were involved in the construction of the Castle, which is now
one of the most spectacular military fortifications in the region.
Over the years, many powerful families ruled the village, which in
1479 became part of the territory of the Genoa Republic.
Lerici is set like a gem in one of the most beautiful and scenic parts
of Italy. Lush hills and a magnificent sea make this village the "Pearl"
of the Gulf of the Poets. When the sun sets, Lerici becomes even more
charming.
The small streets and the promenade by the sea, lined with beautiful
shops, are bustling with activity late into the evening.
